Dimethyl sulfate, abbreviated as DMS, alias methyl sulfate is an industrial methylating agent. The molecular formula is C2H6O4S, which is a colorless to light yellow liquid with a slight odor. The relative molecular mass is 126.13 and the pair density is 1.3283. The melting point is -27 degrees Celsius, the boiling point is 188 degrees Celsius, the flash point is 83 degrees Celsius (closed), 115.6 degrees Celsius, the refractive index is 1.3874, and the viscosity is 1.60 mpa · s (25 degrees Celsius). Insoluble in carbon disulfide and aliphatic hydrocarbons, slightly soluble in water, ether, benzene, etc., miscible with ethanol. It can be decomposed by cold water and alkali solution. Flammable and highly toxic.
The chemical is produced from dimethyl ether and sulfur trioxide as raw materials. It is a commonly used methylation reagent in medicine, cosmetics, printing and dyeing industry and organic synthesis, and is widely used in organic synthesis industry. Easy to stimulate the eyes, mucous membranes, causing headache, dizziness, edema and other acute symptoms, while the eyes, the skin has a burning effect, acute dimethyl sulfate poisoning can be fatal.
