Trimethylol aminomethane (commonly referred to as Tris) is an organic compound with the formula (HOCH2)3CNH2. Tris is widely used in the preparation of buffers in biochemistry and molecular biology experiments. For example, TAE and TBE buffers commonly used in biochemical experiments (for the dissolution of nucleic acids) both require Tris. Because it contains amino groups, it can be condensed with aldehydes.
