Methyl  tert-butyl ether (MTBE), with a melting point of -109 ° C and a boiling point of 55.2 ° C, is a colorless, transparent, high-octane liquid with an ether-like odor.
Methyl  tert-butyl ether is prepared by exothermic reaction of mixed butene and methano l in the presence of acidic catalyst.
Methyl  tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is mainly used as gasolin e additive and has excellent knock resistance. It has good miscibility with gasolin e, less water absorption and no pollution to the environment. MTBE can improve the cold start characteristics and acceleration performance of gasolin e, and has no adverse effect on gas resistance. Although the calorific value of MTBE is low, driving tests show that the use of gasolin e containing 10%MTBE can reduce fuel consumption by 7%, and significantly reduce the amount of lead and carbon  monoxide in the exhaust gas, especially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emissions. As a raw material for organic synthesis, high purity isobutene can be prepared. It can also be used to produce 2 -methylacrolein, methacrylic  acid and isoprene. In addition, it can also be used as an analytical solvent and extractant.

It is mainly used as gasolin e additive, has excellent knock resistance, improves octane number, and can also be cracked to produce isobutene. It has good miscibility with gasolin e, less water absorption, no pollution to the environment, can be improved as an analytical solvent, extractant, in chromatography especially high pressure liquid chromatography as a removal agent, and some polar solvents such as water, methano l, ethanol and other azeotrope formation. Mtbe also has a mild narcotic effect.
