Application
Calcium hydroxide has the common of alkali and is a strong alkali. As the solubility of calcium hydroxide is much less than that of sodiu m hydroxide, the causticity and alkalinity of calcium hydroxide solution are less than that of sodi um hydroxide. These properties determine the wide application of calcium hydroxide. It is used in agriculture to reduce soil acidity and improve soil structure. Bordeaux pesticide liquid is made of lime milk and copper sulfate aqueous solution in a certain proportion, and is used to eliminate pests and diseases by copper element in it. It not only makes use of the nature of calcium hydroxide reaction with copper sulfate, but also makes use of the characteristics of calcium hydroxide slightly soluble in water to make the liquid medicine sticky, which is conducive to the adhesion of the liquid medicine on the plant branches and leaves. In addition, calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to produce calcium carbonate that is insoluble in water, which is also conducive to the medicinal solution adhering to the surface of plants for a period of time and not being washed away by rain.
The reaction of calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide is often used in chemical laboratory as well as industrial and agricultural production. Lime mortar brick plastering is well known, little known is the sugar industry also occurs in this reaction: in the sugar process to use calcium hydroxide to neutralize the acid in the syrup, and then through carbon dioxide to make the remaining calcium hydroxide into precipitation filtering out, so as to reduce the acid taste of sugar.
