butyl alcohol CH3CH2CH2CH2OH is a colorless, wine-smelling liquid with a boiling point of 117.7°C, slightly soluble in water. It is a solvent for a variety of coatings and a raw material for the production of plasticizer dibutyl phthalate (see phthalate), and is also used in the manufacture of butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, ethylene glycol butyl ether and as an extractant for organic synthesis intermediates and biochemical drugs, and is also used in the manufacture of surfactants. Butanol was first discovered in 1852 by the Frenchman C. A. Fuze in fusel oil from the fermentation process to make alcohol. With the rise of petrochemical industry in the 1950s, n- butanol synthesis developed rapidly, especially propylen e carbonyl synthesis.
