Sodium sulfite, chemical formula Na2SO3, common sulfite, white, monoclinic crystal or powder. It has irritating effect on eyes, skin and mucous membrane and can pollute water source. It is subjected to high thermal decomposition to produce toxic sulfide fumes. In industry, it is mainly used to make cellulose sulfite ester, sodium thiosulfate, organic chemicals, bleaching fabrics, etc., and also used as reducing agent, preservative, dechlorination agent, etc.
